ASO recognizes
that caregivers of people living with autism don’t
have enough time for themselves and could use a much
needed break.
So we’re launching a new program, “take
a Break on ASO” to provide caregivers
with respite care and an outing for two! This is a statewide
program now extended throughout all of 2008l. To access
it, you must contact the ASO Chapter Representative for
your region. For the ASO-LCC, that person is Tim Mueller:
541 521 7208 or tim@gwproj.com.
ASO-LCC volunteers are soliciting local
restaurants, hotels, etc to secure donated excursion packages,
but for now this program will only pay for the respite care
provider.
Please check out the guidelines below. |

Lane County Chapter TAKE A BREAK
EXCURSIONS
Still working on this, check back soon.
Caregiver Guidelines:
- First step: call or e-mail Tim Mueller to get in line.
- Caregivers are responsible for booking the respite care. You
may hire your own respite provider, visit the ARC
of Lane County's website to find one of their trained providers.
Also available for respite caregiving is Carly,
(310)980-0274. She is a graduate student with experince working
with kids. Recomended. Also, Merrill
Levine is interested in volunteering with ASO. Her
number is 685-0747, merrillgl@yahoo.com.
- Caregivers will provide to ASO the name and contact information
of the respite care provider as soon as they have it.
- Child care must be provided by a respite care provider. Family
members are not eligible, unless the family member is part of a
respite care provider network.
- ASO will pay for respite care at $12/hour or a maximum of $200
for one care session.
- ASO will pay the respite care provider directly. Respite care
providers will be given a form to fill out and return to ASO-LCC.
Upon approval, payments to respite care providers will expedited
by ASO.
- Caregivers, if they desire, may chose amongst the excursion menus
developed by ASO-LCC, as soon as we develop some.
- This program is on a first come, first serve basis, though if
response is high we may draw names out of a hat.

A Take a Break Testimonial
Hi Genevieve,
I want to thank you and the ASO for providing respite care money.
My husband and I desperately need respite and this allowed us
to go away overnight. We went to a hotel that I found at a reasonable
price and included, dinner and breakfast. We had a relaxing time,
after dinner there was live music in the lounge and we had a great
time.
This time away gave us an
opportunity to reconnect with each other, have a real uninterrupted
conversation, take a nap and sleep in. I can't stress to you enough
how important this is to our relationship and to recharge our
batteries. Families with children on the Autism Spectrum are so
exhausting and we all need a good break to keep up.
Thank you again and I hope that we
can do this again.
