Fund depleted for
the rest of 2010, check back in 2011.
ASO recognizes that caregivers
of people living with autism don’t have enough time
for themselves and could use a much needed break. So
we’re extending our program, “take
a Break on ASO” to provide caregivers
with respite care and an outing for two! This is a statewide
program now extended throughout all of 2009. To access it,
you must contact the ASO Chapter Representative for your region.
For the ASO-LCC, that person is Tim Mueller: 541 521 7208
or tim@gwproj.com.
ASO-LCC volunteers are soliciting local
restaurants, hotels, etc to secure donated excursion packages,
but for now this program will only pay for the respite care
provider.
Please check out the UPDATED for
2009 guidelines below. |
|
Caregiver Guidelines:
- First step: call or e-mail Tim Mueller to get in line. He will
answer all your questions.
- Caregivers are responsible for booking the respite care. You may
hire your own respite provider, or visit the ARC
of Lane County's website to find one of their trained providers.
- Caregivers will provide to ASO the name and contact information
of the respite care provider as soon as they have it.
- Child care must be provided by a respite care provider. Family
members are not eligible, unless the family member is part of a
respite care provider network.
- A $25 gift certificate to a restaurant, 2 movie tickets
and 4 hours of respite care at $12.00/hour is the maximum per excursion.
- ASO will pay the respite care provider directly. Respite care
providers will be given a form to fill out and return to ASO-LCC.
Upon approval, payments to respite care providers will expedited
by ASO.
- This program is on a first come, first serve basis.

Social Skills
Class and scheduled Social Outings
January 18, ongoing. The Lane
County Chapter of the Autism Society of Oregon is launching a Social
Skills Class and scheduled Social Outings on alternating months,
in response to interest by participants in KindTree’s Support
Group for adults on the autism spectrum. The classes and outings
are designed for adults with high-functioning autism or
Aspergers who can get around independently in the community.
The Autism Society of Oregon will help subsidize entrance fees.
During the Social Skills Class, conversation
skills will be taught, role-modeled and practiced. The class will
be taught by Doris Germain, an Autism Specialist
in the Linn-Benton School District. She has taught social skills
at Autism Training and Support in Eugene. Her skill in teaching
social skills has been learned from 20 years of working with people
on the spectrum.
The Social Skills Class is taking place on the
3rd Monday of January and March, 2010, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on 13th and Pearl in Eugene. The
Social Skills Class will decide on the activity for the following
month’s Social Outing.
The Social Outing is taking place in February
and April, 2010, on the third Friday evening of the month from 6:30
to 9:30 p.m. or during the day on Saturday, depending on the activity
chosen by the previous month’s Social Skills Class.
We are hoping to get renewed funding to continue
the activities for the rest of 201
Participants in KindTree’s support group
brainstormed the following list, which is, by no means, exhaustive:
chess, bowling, going to the mall, eating out, laser tag, planetarium,
laser light shows, miniature golf, picnicking, Ems and other spectator
sports, Wildlife Safari, Portland Zoo, Newport Aquarium. People
are encouraged to come up with other ideas.
If you are interested or know someone
who might be interested, call Chapter Representative Mary-Minn Sirag
at (541) 689-2228 or email her at sirag@mindspring.com.

A Take a Break Testimonial
Hi Genevieve,
I want to thank you and the ASO for providing respite care money.
My husband and I desperately need respite and this allowed us
to go away overnight. We went to a hotel that I found at a reasonable
price and included, dinner and breakfast. We had a relaxing time,
after dinner there was live music in the lounge and we had a great
time.
This time away gave us an
opportunity to reconnect with each other, have a real uninterrupted
conversation, take a nap and sleep in. I can't stress to you enough
how important this is to our relationship and to recharge our
batteries. Families with children on the Autism Spectrum are so
exhausting and we all need a good break to keep up.
Thank you again and I hope that we
can do this again.
